It is estimated that the majority of men will experience some kind of thinning hair or hair loss in their lifetimes. In fact estimates that over 60% of men will experience thinning hair.

Because of the emotional distress that hair loss and thinning hair can cause there is a huge demand for hair loss products and products that thicken thinning hair and slow down hair loss. In fact the market for hair loss products is worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

There are various reasons why men and women get thinning hair. The main ones are a poor diet and poor blood circulation, stress and other emotional factors, a negative reaction to medication and hormonal imbalances.

The FDA has only approved two treatments that claim to be able to slow down or halt hair loss. These are Finasteride and Minoxidil respectively. They work in different ways. Minoxidil can be used by men and women, in different strengths. Finasteride is for use by men only.

Minoxidil comes in liquid form and works by increasing the blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. Finasteride blocks a hormone called Dht, that is the main cause of hair loss. Dht shrinks the hair follicle making it thinner and thinner until it eventually atrophies.

Hundreds if not thousands of different products and treatments claim and promise to be able to thicken hair, stop hair loss and even regrown completely new hair. The ingredients and chemicals contained in such products should seriously be considered before usage for health and safety reasons. The source of the products in question should also be considered.

Hair thickening products that are cosmetic in nature and hair pieces are other options to thicken thinning hair.

Hairpieces or wigs have come on a lot in the past decade. The best ones are virtually undetectable even up close and blend in a seamless fashion with one’s own hair. At the top end they can run into several thousand dollars in price and might require an ongoing maintenance fee.

Cosmetic hair thickening products that aim to give increased density and volume work on similar bases. They usually use a serum or thickening agent to cosmetically thicken individual hairs, creating overall density and volume. Cosmetic hair thickeners come in a variety of forms such as hair thickener sprays, conditioners and powdered microfibers. Again, one should be fully aware of any ingredients they may contain before one purchases or uses them.
