Hemorrhoids are a fairly common condition. They occur when blood vessels around the anus, rectal tunnel, or lower rectum get swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids are also known as piles. Some cases of hemorrhoids can be very severe and require professional medical attention. Mild cases of hemorrhoids may be treated in the privacy of your home. There are a few things you can do to make dealing with hemorrhoids easier.

One thing that tends to irritate hemorrhoids is rough or scented toilet paper. Instead of using this type of paper, use soft, plain white paper. Moist wipes are even better.

Lifting improperly can contribute to the development and pain of hemorrhoids. Heavy objects should be lifted using the legs, with knees bent. Do not use your back to lift, and do not hold your breath when you lift. When you lift improperly it places a great deal of strain on varicose veins. When hemorrhoids are inflamed, it is best not to do any lifting at all.

Don’t allow the presence of hemorrhoids to make you sedentary. Even though you are likely to be a little uncomfortable it is better to move a little, get a little exercise even when you have hemorrhoids. You may have to cut back an active exercise regime, but you should be able to walk and move about.

Your diet should be rich in fiber naturally from fruits and vegetables, but it is also a good idea to invest in a good, quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. This is one of the best ways to ensure that you are consuming all of your daily nutritional requirements. Include an iron supplement for healthy blood.

Harsh laxatives, available in the local pharmacy, are not good for your intestinal health. When you need constipation relief try natural laxatives like prunes, dandelion root extract, or flax seed oil. These are more gentle on your system.

Use a cushion when you know you will be sitting on a hard surface for some time. However, it is better to use a regular cushion than the donut cushion designed to give relief to hemorrhoid sufferers. Donut cushions disrupt blood circulation and actually place more pressure on your anus and hemorrhoids, often worsening the condition and the pain.
