In their lifetimes over 60% of men will experience hair loss, baldness and thinning hair in some form or other. It is not just men that experience thinning hair but women too with it being estimated that over 35 % will also experience thinning hair in some form or other.

The market for hair loss and hair thickening products is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars every single year. This is not surprising given the emotional attachment we often have with our hair and the resultant loss of self esteem that some feel when their hair starts thinning or falling out.

There are various reasons why men and women get thinning hair. The main ones are a poor diet and poor blood circulation, stress and other emotional factors, a negative reaction to medication and hormonal imbalances.

The FDA has only approved two treatments that claim to be able to slow down or halt hair loss. These are Finasteride and Minoxidil respectively. They work in different ways. Minoxidil can be used by men and women, in different strengths. Finasteride is for use by men only.

Finasteride works by inhibiting the production of a hormone called Dht. Dht attacks the hair follicle and makes in shrink. Dht is produced by testosterone. Finasteride is taken in tablet form, daily. Minoxidil works by increasing the flow of blood to the hair follicle, this is believed to be able to slow down or halt further thinning and hair loss in some cases.

Of course there are thousands of other products that claim to be able to halt further hair loss, regrow and thicken hair working in various ways. If one does decide to try one of these products the ingredients contained in them should be investigated beforehand for health and safety reasons.

Hair thickening products that are cosmetic in nature and hair pieces are other options to thicken thinning hair.

Wigs and hairpieces can often produce and excellent result, cosmetically at least. The technology and results involved with hairpieces has improved dramatically over the last decade. Even up close the best hairpieces will be virutually undetectable. Some even allow you to go swimming and running with them on. They can be very expensive though and this is something that should be considered before one commits to buying a hairpiece.

Thinning hair can also be thickened by using cosmetic hair thickening products such as hair thickening sprays, mousses, conditioners and fibers. The results can be very effective cosmetically. Usually they thicken hair in a way similar to how eye lashes are thickened by mascara. A thickening agent is usually contained in these products which binds to and thickens hair and improves volume and thickness. Of course, as with any products one should examine the ingredients in them carefully before usage.
